The Big Green Windbag

I've been staring at this blank page for nearly fifteen years. Ironically, I then spent about fifteen minutes staring at that first sentence. I've spent most of my adult life procrastinating on ideas, goals, and projects thanks to a healthy fear of failure, a hefty dose of laziness and conflict avoidance to go along with the thought a bigger idea would be around the corner. Now that I mention it, that last one was probably just the excuse I used. Well anyway, here we go...

Why now? Well, it's quite simple, a perfect storm of weakening delay tactics as time has passed married with a world that spews uncertainty from every corner of the internet. We have the luxury of listening to anyone and everyone pontificate about the next thing to lose sleep over at any moment, anywhere in the world. This blip on the historical radar we call home has pushed on the human condition in ways we haven't seen before. For the last ten years the rate of decay has been hard for me to process. During this time my life has been from its deepest valleys along the journey to peaks I'd only dreamed of. Two children later and I only wish I had started to curate my corner of the world I'd hope to leave them back those fifteen years ago. I have no illusions that this site will right all of the wrongs in this world, but I just might be able to pay it forward to someone painting with a bigger brush than myself. One of these artists will push on needles I didn't know existed, cause the spark at the perfect moment, or simply be kind. No one person is responsible to fix it all, but we can play our part. So I'll be here giving it a shot.

The first thing to unpack is that catchy title, 'Big Green Windbag'. I, too, thought it was pretty great. To be blunt, I hope the writings that follow well help each of us understand our role as a citizen of a world who's ecosystems are out of balance. A world that desperately needs us to find more sustainable paths forward. I'm not just talking about paper vs. plastic, but a broader vision around a way of life that our planet finds more agreeable. No silver bullets, just educating ourselves on the impacts our choices have. I come to this effort eager to learn in my own right, not an ivory tower in sight. While delightful, whitty, and some other adjectives, my words are little more than catalyst toward culture change. A culture where its normal, perhaps even 'cool' to care about our planet in everyday life. This lives and grows with you, with you doing your own research, having an opinion, and bringing it up for deliberation over a beer with friends, or a taco with your inquistitve kids. Let's make caring about the planet cool, you just need to be a big green windbag.
